The first deputy chairman of Bangladesh's first Planning Commission, Professor Nurul Islam, passed away today at the Johns Hopkins University Suburban Hospital in Maryland, the United States.
Nurul Islam passed away at the hospital due to old age-related issues.
He has been living in the United States since 1987, leaves behind a son, a daughter, and a large number of relatives.
Nurul Islam earned a BA in economics from Dhaka University and a PhD in economics from Harvard University.
He returned to Dhaka University as a lecturer and was an active participant in the campaign for economic justice for then-East Pakistan against the ruling establishment before to the formation of Bangladesh.
He contributed significantly to the Six Points Program, which cleared the path for independence.
He then became the chairman of Bangladesh's Planning Commission.
He was a passionate nationalist and supporter of an independent Bangladesh.
