Montaj Ali Babari alias Mumtaz, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity in 1971, was on the run without surrendering to the court after his bail expired in 2016. During this time, he spent seven years on the run at his son-in-law's house in Gaibandha, and sometimes at his son's house in Gazipur. But, eventually a team of RAB arrested this war criminal.
A team of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mumtaz from his elder son Shafiqul Islam's house in Chandra, Kaliakair police station of Gazipur yesterday.
Commander of RAB-3, Lt. Col. Arif Mohiuddin gave this information at a press conference organized by RAB-3 in Tikatuli of the capital today.
In the press conference, the RAB official said that in 2009, 5 people including Mumtaz were charged with crimes against humanity in Gaibandha court. The case was later transferred to the International Criminal Tribunal in 2014.
He said, "When the judicial process started, Mumtaz and other accused remained on bail until 2016. An arrest warrant was issued against Mumtaz for not attending the hearing of the ongoing case at the International Criminal Tribunal. Soon after this, Mumtaz left his home and hid in his son-in-law's house in Gaibandha City. He would often change places and sometimes went to the rented house of his elder son Shafiqul Islam in Kaliakair of Gazipur district."
The head of RAB-3 said, "In 2019, the International Criminal Tribunal sentenced 4 people including Momtaz to death. Two of the accused (Abdul Jabbar and Ranju Mia) died while on the run after the verdict of the case. Jachizar Rahman and Abdul Wahid Mondal, the fugitive accused in the case, were arrested by RAB earlier.
