Awami League's General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday said that there is no possibility of any major changes in the committee in the upcoming council.
He informed that there are at least 10 leaders vying for the post of party's general secretary in the 22nd national council.
Highlighting the indispensability of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the president of the Awami League, Quader said: 'Whoever is the president of the party is a symbol of our unity. She (Sheikh Hasina) is essential here. Not a councilor can be found who does not support her. So there is no question about it.”
Regarding the general secretary of the party, he said: "Many leaders may want to be a candidate for this post…Awami League is a democratic party. As per my knowledge, there are at least 10 candidates for this post who are qualified to become the general secretary.”
The senior leader said: “Who will be a general secretary will be reflected in the decision of the party's president and the opinion of the councilors in the second session of the council.”
The next conference will be after the elections. The party is not thinking of any major changes for now. But everything will depend on the opinion of the councilors, said Quader.
“I don't want to predict anything right now,” he said.
Asked about Awami League's thoughts about controversial leaders, Obaidul Quader said: "The present executive committee is a very active one. I have seen the committee working even during Covid-19 pandemic. Everything depends on the leader. We are not perfect people, we are only human who make mistakes. Finding new leadership requires a lot of thinking. We have thoughts about the controversial leaders.”
Referring to the building of “Digital Bangladesh” with the help of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son and advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy, he said: “Now Awami League's goal is to build Smart Bangladesh. We will work towards building a developed, prosperous Bangladesh, smart Bangladesh within 2041. We will move forward under the leadership of Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina and this year's conference will be a challenging time.”
Quader said: "We are ready for the 12th national elections. We are ready, united and disciplined to run the next government, this is our message.”
