The authorities concrened are yet to trace a single person who went missing after a trawler capsized after being hit by a launch in the Dhaleshwari River in Narayanganj, as the rescue operation continues for a third day.
Meanwhile, the district administration started probing the mid-river collision, reports the Dhaka Tribune citing Deputy Commissioner Md Mostain Billah.
“A probe body has been formed with Narayanganj Sadar UNO
as its convener, and it will submit its report within 10 business days,” he said.Officials of different government agencies, including the River Police, fire service and coastguard, are in the panel as well.
Meanwhile, the Fire Service said it will continue its search efforts until all of the missing persons are found.
“No one has been able to confirm the exact location of the accident… There is also a possibility of the bodies being washed away by tide,” said Narayanganj Fire Service Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefin, explaining why a single body has yet to be found.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Acting Deputy Director Babu Lal Baidya on Thursday filed a case with Fatullah model police station, against three people over the capsize.
The accused are launch master Kamrul Islam, driver Md Jasimuddin Bhuiyan and “sukani” (steerman) Jasim Mollah.
At least 10 people went missing after the trawler, hit by the launch MV Farhan 6, capsized on Wednesday morning.
Reckless navigation and an uncontrolled increase in the number of vessels on waterways have led to collisions and have been the leading cause of water accidents in the country since 2005.
According to a 2021 research, collisions accounted for 61.72% of all waterway accidents between 2008 and 2019. These accidents accounted for 53% of fatalities on waterways.
