DUCSU Polls: Shibir finalizes panel, Chhatra Dal still awaiting Tarique’s nod

The Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has finalized its panel for the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, while the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has yet to do so.

On the last day for collecting nomination forms, the BNP’s student wing could not settle its lineup. Instead, several of its leaders collected forms individually, saying that the final panel would be determined by BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

So far, three candidates from JCD have collected forms for the vice president (VP) post — Mominul Islam Jisan, Senior Joint Secretary of the central committee; BM Kawsar, Joint Secretary of the DU unit; and Abidul Islam Khan.

For other posts, Tanvir Bari Hamim, convener of the Jasimuddin Hall unit, collected a form for General Secretary, while Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed, convener of the Bijoy Ekattor Hall unit, filed for Assistant General Secretary (AGS). DU Chhatra Dal’s Information and Research Secretary Zarif Rahman also collected a form, though his intended position was not disclosed.

Speaking after collecting his form on Monday, Abidul Islam Khan said, “Our panel has not been finalized yet. But our leader Tarique Rahman asked us to collect forms, so we did. He will decide who will contest for which post.”

Meanwhile, both Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and the Bangladesh Chhatra Adhikar Parishad have already announced their full panels.

According to the schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination forms is August 19. Scrutiny will be held on August 20, and the list of valid candidates will be published on August 21.

Withdrawal of nominations will be allowed until August 25, with the final list of candidates published on August 26. The polls are slated for September 9, while the final voter list will be published on August 11.

As per the 1973 Dhaka University Ordinance, DUCSU and hall union elections are meant to be held annually.

However, in its century-long history, DU has held only 37 student union polls — 29 during the British and Pakistani periods, and just 8 in the 53 years since Bangladesh’s independence.
