Police have recovered the body of a local Jamaat leader with his throat slit in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha.
The victim, identified as Nazrul Islam (34), was the president of the Labour Welfare Federation, an affiliated body of Jamaat-e-Islami, in Nakai Union’s Shital village. He was the son of late Tofazzal Islam of the same village.
According to his family, Nazrul ran a grocery shop and a mobile financial service (bKash) business at Shital village bazar. He often spent nights at his shop. Family members believe he closed his business on Saturday night and stayed there, as he usually did.
Local residents said they discovered a body lying by the roadside near Bagura Beel in Shital village while out for a morning walk around 7am on Sunday. Upon closer inspection, they found the victim with his throat slit and immediately informed his family and the police.
Nazrul’s younger brother, Nazirul Islam, claimed his brother had been receiving threats from online gamblers and hackers who attempted to withdraw money illegally through his mobile banking service. “He refused to cooperate with them, and they had been threatening him for days. Last night, they killed him while he was returning home from his shop,” he alleged. He further urged police to arrest the local online gamblers and hackers, saying that would quickly reveal the perpetrators.
Ashraful Islam, president of Nakai Union’s Labour Welfare Federation, described Nazrul as a dedicated activist and strongly condemned the killing. He demanded swift action to arrest those responsible.
Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bulbul Islam said the body had been sent for autopsy. He added that police have already launched operations to uncover the motive behind the murder and to arrest the killers.
