US trade delegation’s India visit called off amid tariff dispute

A planned visit by US trade representatives to New Delhi later this month has been canceled, Indian broadcaster NDTV Profit reported.

The delegation was scheduled to arrive between August 25 and 29, but the trip will likely be rescheduled, NDTV said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The development comes as trade tensions escalate between the two countries. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% blanket tariff on Indian exports and announced an additional 25% duty—set to take effect on August 27—as a “penalty” for India’s purchase of Russian crude.

According to the report, both sides remain in contact, though a new date for talks has not yet been finalized.

Trump’s combined 50% tariff on Indian exports is one of the steepest imposed on any US trading partner and has drawn strong criticism from New Delhi.

India has argued that it is being targeted unfairly, pointing out that both the EU and the US continue trading with Russia.

“It is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion

,” India’s foreign ministry said earlier this month.

Neither India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry nor the Office of the US Trade Representative immediately responded to requests for comment.

The US is India’s largest export market, accounting for nearly 20% of its overall exports. Goods worth $86.51 billion were shipped to the US in the fiscal year ending March 2025, according to official data.
