ACC summons Benazir Ahmed for interrogation

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed for questioning. He is scheduled to appear before the ACC on June 6, while his wife and children are set to be interrogated on June 9.

Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir confirmed this information to the media on Tuesday, May 28.

Earlier, on Monday, May 27, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan mentioned, “The decision to arrest Benazir Ahmed depends on the investigation officers. If deemed necessary, the investigation officer will request a travel ban for Benazir Ahmed from the court. Moreover, if additional assets are discovered during the investigation, a petition will be filed in court to seize those assets.”

On Thursday, May 23, the court ordered the seizure of 83 property deeds belonging to Benazir Ahmed. Additionally, 33 bank accounts were frozen.

Earlier Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader. "The Hasina government has given ACC this independence. Even if a former Army Chief is guilty, ACC can investigate," Quader stated.

Benazir Ahmed served as the IGP from April 15, 2020, to September 30, 2022. Prior to this, he was the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). In December 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on RAB and seven of its current and former officers, including Benazir Ahmed, over allegations of human rights violations.
