At least 135 killed in countrywide violence Monday

Police firings, mob beatings, and arson across the country killed at least 135 people before and after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister on Monday, reports Dhaka Tribune. 

The previous day, the country reported at least 96 deaths in police firings due to clashes between Awami League members and protesters.

At least 18 people were killed in Savar and Dhamrai areas, on the outskirts of the capital, after clashes broke out between police and miscreants on Monday.

Another 50 people were injured as police fired tear shells and bullets. There were several journalists among those shot, local people said. 

At least 10 people were killed and many others injured in the capital’s Uttara on Monday afternoon after individuals in civilian clothes reportedly opened fire on protesters. The shots were fired from the Uttara East police station. In response, hundreds of enraged people surrounded the police station and set it on fire. 

Sources at different hospitals confirmed at least 78 deaths in the capital.

In Habiganj, at least six people were killed and over 100 injured in a clash between protesters and police. The deceased were identified as Hasan Mia, 12, Ashraful, 17, Nayan, 18, Tofazzal, 18, Mojakkir, 40, and Sadiqur, 30.

In Jessore, at least eight people were burned to death and 84 others were injured after unidentified arsonists set fire to a residential hotel.

The hotel was owned by Shahin Chakladar, general secretary of the Jessore district AL.

In Khulna, three people, including Koyra Upazila Parishad Chairman and Upazila Awami League President GM Mohsin Reza, were beaten to death by a mob. 

The other two deceased were identified as Reza‍‍`s driver, Alamgir, and his personal assistant, Mofizul Islam.

In Barisal, three people were burned to death after agitators set fire to former mayor and City AL President Serniabat Sadik Abdullah on Monday.

Arichur Huq, OC of Kotwali police station, confirmed the matter.

In Tangail, two people were killed in Sadar Upazila while another person died in a police firing in Dhanbari Upazila on Monday.

At least, 40 others were injured in the district. 

Elsewhere in Lakshmipur, at least 11 people were killed in clashes on Monday. Hospital sources said another 35 were bearing bullet wounds. 

Of them, a total of seven bodies were recovered in front of former Jubo League leader and Sadar upazila Chairman AKM Salah Uddin Tipu‍‍`s house in the district‍‍`s Tamiz Market area.

In Kushtia, six people, including a 13-year-old, were killed.

Another three people were killed in Satkhira.

Meanwhile, at least six people were shot when Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) men opened fire on miscreants who had obstructed two BGB vehicles in Sreepur of Gazipur.

There were at least 80 BGB men inside the vehicles.

The incident took place around 12 noon on Monday.

In Safipur of Gazipur, two people died after members of Ansar opened fire on Monday afternoon.

Sources said, miscreants attacked the Ansar-VDP Academy in Safipur and vandalized the premises. The members of Ansar opened fire in self-defence and two people died on the spot.

Over 100 others were injured in the incident.

Miscreants also attacked Konabari and Basan police stations as well. 

In Naogaon, a group of miscreants vandalized the residence of Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder.

Meanwhile, miscreants vandalized and set fire to the house of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, MP of Narail-2 constituency, Monday.

Additionally, they set fire to the district AL office and vandalized district AL President Subash Chandra Bose’s houses. 

In Narayanganj, miscreants vandalized the residence of Shamim Osman, the MP from Narayanganj-4 constituency. 

They also targeted and vandalized the district AL office.

In Comilla, the house of AKM Bahauddin Bahar, the MP from Comilla-6 (Sadar) constituency, was set on fire. 

A mob stormed Bahar‍‍`s house in the Manoharpur Munsefbari area of Comilla city, causing extensive damage before setting the property ablaze.

In Sherpur, miscreants stormed into the district jail, allowing 500 inmates to flee from the jail.

A mob equipped with sticks and local weapons brought out a procession amid curfew Monday afternoon.

In Chittagong, miscreants attacked, vandalized, and set fire to at least six police stations, looting weapons, bullets, and various equipment.

Additionally, the homes and offices of AL leaders and activists were targeted.
