Concerns over the proliferation of rumors on social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube have prompted the government to consider stricter measures. Minister of Liberation War A. K. M. Mozammel Haque announced that if these platforms fail to address the issue, they may face temporary shutdowns in the country.
Speaking after a Cabinet Committee on Law and Order meeting at the Secretariat on Sunday, Minister Haque emphasized the government`s determination to combat misinformation spread through social media.
Highlighting the challenges faced in regulating social media companies, Minister Haque lamented their lack of responsiveness to government notifications regarding rumors and cybercrime. He asserted that if necessary, temporary shutdowns of Facebook and YouTube would be implemented to address the issue effectively.
Addressing concerns over potential backlash, Minister Haque stressed that proper notification procedures would be followed, including informing international organizations about the government`s actions. He emphasized the government`s commitment to safeguarding fundamental rights while tackling misinformation.
Minister Haque indicated that initial warnings would be issued to social media companies, followed by public notifications, including newspaper advertisements, to ensure transparency in the government`s efforts to combat rumors and maintain cyber safety.
