Rainfall across capital and other regions likely to continue

Due to a low-pressure system over the sea and the influence of seasonal winds, rainfall is occurring in Dhaka and various regions across Bangladesh, and the wet conditions are expected to continue for the next few days.

Strong coastal winds have prompted the Meteorological Department to advise a number three warning at the four sea ports and a number one warning at river ports. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in some areas of the country.

On Thursday morning, Dhaka experienced cloudy skies with occasional light drizzle, while moderate to heavy rain was reported in various locations during the afternoon.

The Meteorological Department reported that the low-pressure system, located over the west-central and northwestern Bay of Bengal near the coast of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha in India, was positioned in the same area at 6 am.

The axis of the seasonal wind extends from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, the low-pressure center, southern Bangladesh, and up to Assam. The seasonal wind is moderately active over Bangladesh and is moderately to strongly active over the northern Bay of Bengal.

Weather Forecast

From 9 am Thursday to the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with occasional gusty winds may occur in many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and in some areas of Rajshahi division. Isolated moderate to heavy rainfall is also possible in parts of the country.

The forecast for Friday indicates continued rainfall in many areas. Heavy rain with occasional gusty winds or thunderstorms is expected in many parts of Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and in some areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barishal divisions. Isolated moderate to heavy rainfall may also occur in other regions.

Weather Forecast

The low-pressure system has caused increased air pressure variations over the northern Bay of Bengal. Strong or squally winds may affect the northern Bay of Bengal, coastal areas, and sea ports.

Accordingly, a number three local warning has been issued for Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra sea ports. Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal and deep seas have been advised to operate close to the coast and proceed with caution until further instructions.

For inland river ports, from now until 6 p.m. Thursday, moderate to strong gusty winds at 45–60 km/h from the south or southeast may accompany rain or thunderstorms over Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar regions. Accordingly, a number one warning has been issued for the river ports in these areas.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall warnings indicate that from 9 a.m. Thursday to the next 24 hours, isolated areas of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions may experience heavy to very heavy rain.
