The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed strong condemnation of the explosion that took place at the BIAM Foundation building in Dhaka, claiming it was a bomb attack.
The party`s statement came after one person was killed and another was seriously injured in the blast.
However, the family of the deceased, Abdul Malek Khan, insists that the incident was caused by an air-conditioner explosion.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, BNP`s Assistant Office Secretary Mohammad Taiful Islam Tipu described the explosion as a "cowardly and despicable bomb attack" carried out by miscreants.
The statement confirmed the death of Abdul Malek Khan (40), an office assistant, and injuries to another person, Md. Faruk (30), who was present in the building at the time. Both men had been staying overnight at the BIAM Foundation building.
BNP`s Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, also voiced his deep concern about the incident.
He condemned the attack and called it a clear example of the deteriorating law and order situation in the country.
“This kind of attack proves how much the law and order situation has deteriorated. After the fall of the authoritarian Awami regime, miscreants have caused instability and chaos,” he said in the statement.
The explosion took place in the early hours of Friday morning, and while the BNP claimed it was a bomb attack, Abdul Malek Khan’s brother, Sohel Khan, explained that his brother died after an air-conditioner exploded in his room.
"My brother worked as an office assistant at BIAM Foundation. He used to stay at the office overnight. Sometime during the night, the air-conditioner in his room exploded, seriously injuring him. We rushed him to the hospital, but the doctors declared him dead," said Sohel Khan.
The National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute`s residential doctor, Shawon Bin Rahman, also confirmed that the incident was caused by an air-conditioner explosion, not a bomb.
In his statement, BNP’s Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and emphasized the need for a strong response.
"It is essential that these miscreants are dealt with severely. We hope the attackers will be caught quickly and brought to justice," he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of unity among all segments of society to protect democracy, safeguard citizens` rights, and ensure their safety.
"The country’s democracy, the people`s right to vote, and the safety of all citizens are at risk, and we need everyone to stay united, regardless of political beliefs," the statement concluded.
