Debapriya Bhattacharya, the head of the White Paper Drafting Committee, has expressed concern over the interim government`s decision to raise VAT, calling it a reckless move.
Speaking at a symposium held on Saturday morning at the BICC in Agargaon, Dhaka, Debapriya shared his thoughts on economic management, reforms, and the national budget.
He emphasized that while the interim government has been focusing on institutional and administrative sectors, it has neglected the need for economic reforms.
He said,
"The interim government is focusing more on institutional and administrative sectors, while economic reforms are being ignored. They have increased VAT without proper thought, and no significant attention has been given to raising direct taxes."
Economist Zahid Hossain also weighed in, predicting that the country’s economic growth could be around 4% this year.
He further mentioned that there is little room for the new budget to exceed 8 lakh crore taka, as the biggest challenges for the economy will revolve around policies, politics, and nature in the near future.
