BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed that the upcoming national election could take place in July or August this year, following the Election Reform Commission‍‍`s report submission.

Speaking at a press briefing held on Tuesday morning, January 14, at BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Fakhrul explained the outcomes of a meeting the party’s standing committee held on Monday night.

Mirza Fakhrul made it clear that BNP does not support the idea of holding local elections before the national polls. He believes this would only delay the national election.

"There is no reason for the election to be delayed,” Fakhrul stated, adding, “The more the election is delayed, the more political and economic crises are created."

The BNP leader also criticized the government’s recent decision to increase taxes on essential items and raise gas prices, warning that such actions would only make life harder for ordinary people.

He pointed out that voter registration could be completed within a month, making it possible to hold the national election in mid-2025.

Fakhrul called on the interim government to start preparing for the elections as soon as possible.

Fakhrul reiterated that local elections before the national election are "out of the question" and firmly opposed any such plan.

He further emphasized that rushing through trials of fascism would lead to doubts about the fairness of the process but assured that the trials already in progress would continue as planned.

Interestingly, Fakhrul also acknowledged the government’s firm stance on the border issue, giving thanks and appreciation to the government for their strong position in addressing this concern.
