EU will only send observer team if elections are 'participatory'

Charles Whiteley, the ambassador of the European Union appointed in Dhaka, has clearly stated that the European Union will send a full observer team only if the upcoming 12th National Parliament election of Bangladesh is 'participatory'.

He said this at a press conference organized on the occasion of 'Europe Day' at a hotel in the capital today.

"We (EU) are ready to send an election observation mission," Whiteley said. "As you are also aware, we have received a letter from the Election Commission regarding the deployment of our observation mission. It was necessary as a security so that there would be no hindrance to the sending of observers.”

"We cannot say right now whether such a group participated or not and sending observers depends on that," he said.

The EU ambassador also said, "An 'independent review mission' will come from the European Union (EU) in July to review the issue of sending observers before the elections." The independent expert team will assess the situation and submit its opinion to the High Representative of the EU."

In response to a journalist's question about discussing the EU elections with the BNP at the press conference, the European Union diplomat said, "We did not just sit with the BNP. We sat and talked with all the political parties. We tried to understand everyone's attitude. What the BNP says publicly about the election, they have presented to us."

Ambassadors of Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain in Dhaka were present at the press conference.
