Eyewitness traders said that the fire started from the warehouse area of Bangabazar, Gulistan. According to some of them, the fire spread quickly because Bangabazar was made of wood and tin.
Eyewitnesses said that immediately after the fire, many traders started to take out the goods of the shop and put them on the New Secretary road in front. The fire on one side and the goods being unloaded on the other caused piles of goods on the road ahead. After burning for an hour, a part of Bangabazar collapsed around at 7 am. A pile of clothes on the street caught fire. The fire also spread to Banga Islamia Market and Banga Homeo Market on the opposite side of New Secretary Road.
Some shopkeepers on the ground floor of Islamia Market said that they rushed to the news of the fire in the morning. They said that the fire spread to the two markets on the other side of the road in Bangabazar due to the goods being kept on the road. The traders were keeping the goods taken out from Bangabazar on the road. When the market collapsed after an hour of burning, the fire got worse. This market caught fire in just two minutes.
Around 12 pm, the fire was again seen to be spreading more in Islamia Market and Annex Market.
A fire broke out in Bangabazar at around 6 am on Tuesday. All fire service units are currently working to control the fire. Officially, the cause of the fire is not yet known, said the senior station manager of the fire service headquarters, Shahjahan Shikder.
