Tensions flared today as police blocked a protest march against rape and violence towards women, which was heading towards the Chief Adviser`s residence.
The protest, organized by students from various colleges in Dhaka, demanded justice and the strictest punishment for those involved in crimes against women.
The demonstration began earlier in the day with students gathering in small groups at the National Museum in Shahbagh.
From there, they marched and raised slogans calling for an end to violence, abuse, and rape.
The march was organized under the banner of "Bangladesh Against Rape and Harassment."
The students, from 30 different colleges, expressed their anger over the increasing incidents of violence against women.
At around 1:20 PM, the students blocked the Shahbagh intersection, causing a halt to traffic.
The blockade continued for about 15 minutes, until they moved off the road at 1:35 PM. They returned to the museum and resumed their protest there.
However, as the protest continued, the students made their way towards the residence of the Chief Adviser at around 2:45 PM.
Their path was blocked by a police barricade near the Hotel Intercontinental.
When the students attempted to break through the barricade, they were met with resistance from the police.
This led to a brief scuffle between the two groups.
The protest, which began as a peaceful demonstration, became tense as students demanded an immediate response from the government to address the issue of violence against women.
