Train services between Dhaka and several parts of the country were stopped on Monday after students from Titumir College blocked the rail tracks in Mohakhali.
The protest started around 11:00 AM, as the students, demanding that their college be upgraded to a university, also blocked nearby roads.
The blockade caused major disruptions to train services.
According to Khairul Kabir, a divisional transport officer in Dhaka, all train services were halted from 11:45 AM.
"We want our college to be upgraded to a university and won`t leave the tracks until our demands are met," said Shihab, a first-year student involved in the protest.
The students stopped the Agnibina Express, a train traveling from Jamalpur`s Tarakandi to Dhaka, and threw bricks at it, according to a railway official.
The train was able to continue its journey after a short delay.
At around 12:07 PM, the students also blocked another train, forcing it to stop on the tracks.
By 12:15 PM, Joynal Abedin, the officer-in-charge at Kamalapur Police Station, confirmed that police were on their way to the protest site to handle the situation.
