Students at Jagannath University (JNU) have locked the main gate of the campus to press for three urgent demands.

They’ve also begun a mass hunger strike at the locked gate, demanding swift action from the authorities.

The protest started early Monday when the students locked the gate. Their three demands are:

  1. The immediate signing of an agreement to transfer the construction of JNU‍‍`s second campus to the army.
  2. Fast-tracking the construction of Bani Bhaban and the steel-based building of Dr. Habibur Rahman Hall in Old Dhaka.
  3. Providing housing allowances for 70% of the students until permanent accommodation is arranged.

A visit to the JNU campus revealed that students from nearly all departments have joined in the protest, locking the gates of their respective departments as well.

The mass hunger strike, which began Sunday night, is still ongoing. Due to the locked main gate, no vehicles can enter the campus, though the smaller pocket gate has been kept open for the movement of students.

Students say they will continue the protest until their demands are met.
