Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has warned that law enforcement will take action if anyone takes to the streets in the name of hunger strike. He made the remarks in response to a question from reporters on Friday (November 19) afternoon.
The Home Minister said, “We have nothing to say or do about the BNP's mass hunger strike. However, if anyone takes to the streets in the name of hunger strike, law enforcement will take action.”
Regarding the treatment of Khaleda Zia, the Home Minister said that the treatment has been arranged keeping the punishment suspended as per the provisions of the law. The law minister also explained the law about going abroad.
He further said, "We want to say this, Khaleda Zia should get good treatment, get well, we also want that". However, he added that it is not a matter of going beyond the existing laws of the country.
Mentioning that the Awami League never planned to win the elections by putting the people in front of the barrel of gun, he said, the situation could have been different if the ruling party would interfere the election. 85 BNP candidates won’t win the polls.”
Mentioning that many people are dreaming of overthrowing the government by conspiracy, the Home Minister said that it is not possible. Because people have no confidence in BNP leaders. Because there is no similarity between their words and deeds.
The BNP has announced a nationwide hunger strike Saturday demanding release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and her treatment abroad. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the program at a press conference on Thursday.
Fakhrul called upon the leaders and workers of the party to make this program a success from 9 am to 4 pm at the metropolitan and district level of the country besides Dhaka.
