Heavy rains and inflow of water from India have inundated at least 10 villages and the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria`s Akhaura upazila.
Local and administrative sources report that heavy rain began in Akhaura on Tuesday night, and by Wednesday morning, water started flooding through the canal adjacent to the port. The affected villages include Bautala, Birchandrapur, Kalikapur, Bangerchar, and Saheb Nagar.
The temporary bridge in the Gazirbazar area was damaged, and sections of the Howrah river embankment broke earlier on Tuesday, leading to flooding in the Khalapara area.
Dakshin UP Chairman Jalal Uddin noted that the influx of water from India accelerated in the morning. Besides submerging some villages, the temporary bridge on the Akhaura-Agartala road was also broken, leaving the entire port area under water.
Akhaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gazala Parvin stated that extensive flooding has affected cropland and several villages. Efforts are underway to repair the dam, and the Roads and Highways Department has been notified to fix the bridge, which will be made traffic-friendly soon.
All primary schools in the upazila have been designated as shelters, and the upazila administration plans to provide dry food to families affected by the flooding, according to the UNO.
