On the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an important meeting with Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government. The meeting centered on reinforcing India-Bangladesh relations, regional cooperation, and addressing mutual concerns for long-term stability and prosperity.
On Friday, April 4, these statements were made in a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s unwavering support for a democratic, stable, and inclusive Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of people-centric cooperation between the two nations. He also emphasized the tangible benefits that cooperation has brought to both countries and expressed India’s commitment to strengthening ties based on pragmatic collaboration.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of avoiding rhetoric that could harm the diplomatic environment and emphasized the necessity of border security—especially regarding illegal crossings at night. He suggested that a bilateral mechanism could meet as needed to further review and enhance their relationship.
A key topic of discussion was the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, particularly the Hindu community. Prime Minister Modi urged that Bangladesh ensure the protection of minorities and take appropriate measures, including thorough investigations into any atrocities committed against them.
Additionally, the Prime Minister congratulated Bangladesh on assuming the Chair of BIMSTEC and expressed hope that the forum would continue to advance regional integration under Bangladesh’s leadership. Both leaders agreed to enhance consultations and cooperation within the BIMSTEC framework.
In closing, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that all mutual interests between the two countries would be addressed bilaterally through constructive discussions, reinforcing the longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship between India and Bangladesh.
This meeting marks another step forward in fostering stronger ties between the two neighboring nations, focused on peaceful coexistence, regional development, and shared progress.
