The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 today convicted and sentenced four Razakars from Bhandaria upazila in Pirojpur to death for their crimes against humanity in 1971.
The four convicts are- Abdul Mannan Howlader, Ashraf Ali alias Asrab Ali Howlader, Md Moharaj Howlader alias Hatkata Moharaj and Md Nurul Amin Howlader. Of the four, Md Nurul Amin Howlader is yet to be arrested and was tried in absentia.
The three judges of the ICT-1 read out the summary of the 228-page judgment, with tribunal chairman Justice Md Shahinur Islam reading out the sentencing portion.
"...they be hanged by the neck till they are dead, under section 20(2) of
the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973," the judgment said.
The tribunal found all the four convicts guilty under charge-1 and 4, and sentenced them to death for committing genocide. It, however, found Mannan, Ashraf and Moharaj guilty in charge- 3 and 4, and sentenced them to imprisonment till natural death and five-year jail, respectively.
"As the four have been condemned to `sentences of death`, as above, the `sentences of imprisonment for life till natural death` and sentence of imprisonment for five years awarded to them in respect of charge number 2 and 3 respectively shall get merged into the `sentences of death ` as awarded to
them in respect of charge- 1, 4," the tribunal said.
Since the convict Md Nurul Amin Howlader has been absconding, the `sentence of death` as awarded above to him shall be executed after causing his arrest or when he surrenders before the Tribunal, whichever is earlier, the judgment added.
