A textile worker was killed under the wheels of a Gazipur City Corporation garbage truck on Saturday, sparking a protest that momentarily halted the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
Munira, a Liz Apparels employee, died on the scene after being hit by a Gazipur City Corporation garbage truck in the Kunia Barabari section of Gazipur at 8:30 am, according to RMG personnel, neighbors, and police.
Hearing the news, villagers and RMG workers came to the streets, blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at 10:45 am, according to Rezaul Karim, inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police.
They also vandalised multiple vehicles and set fire to a garbage truck, he said.
Vehicle movement resumed when police brought the situation under control at 11:45 am, according to Mosharraf Hossain, senior assistant superintendent of police for Gazipur Industrial Police-2.
Meanwhile, individuals suffered greatly as a result of the agitation and roadblocks.
"I was on my way to Dhaka to donate blood to a patient. "I am currently waiting for a vehicle," stated Shakil Ahmed.
Ain Uddin Islam, 60, said, "I`ve been waiting since the morning for my daughter-in-law and grandchildren to arrive from Madaripur. They claimed to have arrived at Abdullahpur that morning. I don`t understand why they haven`t arrived yet. I heard there had been an accident on the road. I don`t knows what their circumstance is."
Most garment factories in the area have been declared closed for the day due to fears of vandalism, according to Ziaul Kabir Khokon, district head of the Garment Workers Trade Union.
