Rinku, the accused in the incident of physically assaulting two young women over smoking in a tea shop in Lalmatia, Dhaka, has been arrested.
This claim was made by Cultural Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki in a Facebook post on Monday, March 10.
In his post, Farooki wrote, "The harasser Rinku from Lalmatia was arrested last night." He then quoted a few lines from a song by Farzana Wahid Shayan:
“If I speak, when should I speak softly,
when should I speak louder?
How should I laugh, how should I sit, how should I sleep?
You will tell me,
What will work and what won’t,
You told me,
Won’t anyone tell you?
After today, there will be no more chatter,
Nothing will work!”
Earlier, on March 2, an argument broke out in Lalmatia when an elderly man objected to two young women smoking in public, which led to a confrontation and the gathering of a crowd, escalating the situation.
The matter was resolved with police intervention.
After the incident became widely known, many expressed their anger and there were protests.
A call for the resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser was also made, and effigies of the Adviser were burned.
