What to do to have a fair price of your rawhide

As the Qurbani season unfolds, the minimum price for salted animal hides in Dhaka has been set at 1,350 BDT, while outside the capital, the minimum price stands at 1,150 BDT. Larger hides generally fetch higher prices.

However, immediately after Qurbani, rawhides without salting are commonly sold. These hides do not have fixed prices and are sold based on negotiation between buyers and sellers.

Every year, many sellers face difficulties in selling rawhides at fair prices. Complaints often arise that hides are sold cheaply, sometimes at "water prices." In some cases, sellers have resorted to discarding or burying hides due to lack of suitable buyers or prices.

Industry experts advise that following certain guidelines can help avoid losses and secure better prices for hides.

According to the Department of Livestock Services, the demand for Qurbani animals this year is approximately 13.8 million, while around 12.45 million animals—including cows and goats—are prepared for Qurbani.

Meanwhile, tannery owners aim to collect between 8 to 8.5 million hides this season. Typically, 50–60% of the annual hide supply is collected during this period, making it the peak season for hide trade.

Given the high volume of hides entering the market, it is crucial for sellers to adopt best practices to minimize losses and maximize returns. Experts recommend proper handling, timely salting, and ensuring hides are kept in good condition before sale.

By following these methods, sellers can protect the value of their hides and obtain fair market prices during this significant trading season.
