Seventy villages in the Porshuram and Fulgazi upazilas of Feni have been inundated for the third time due to a three-day downpour and upstream tides from India.

Local sources report that water breached the embankment at previously damaged points along the Muhuri-Kahua-Silonia river system.

In Porshuram Upazila, 40 villages across the municipality and three unions are submerged, while 30 villages in the same number of unions are affected in Fulgazi Upazila.

According to the Water Development Board, the water levels in the Mahua, Kakua, and Silonia rivers are currently more than 55 centimeters above the danger mark at the Porshuram and Fulgazi monitoring points.

These upazilas first experienced flooding on July 1 and again on August 2, with the embankment breaches contributing to the flooding of numerous villages. The latest flood has struck before repairs could be made to the previous breaches.

Porshuram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Afroza Habiba Shapla reported that the latest deluge has affected villages including Baurkhuma, Dublachad, Bilonia, Anantapur, Berabaria, and Kolapara in Porshurampur Municipality, as well as numerous villages in Mirzanagar, Chithlia, and Boxmahmud unions. Approximately 9,200 families in these areas are currently marooned.

Fulgazi UNO Tania Bhuiyan stated that villages in Nilaxmi, Gabtala, Montala, Gosaipur, Sreepur, Basura, Derhpara, and Uttar Daulotpur unions, along with several others, have been flooded, affecting around 4,000 families.

In response to the flooding, the upazila administrations have stockpiled emergency supplies: 500 packets of dry food and 50 metric tons of rice in Porshuram, and 300 packets of dry food and 18 metric tons of rice in Fulgazi.

The floodwaters have also submerged the Feni-Bilonia Regional Road, disrupting communication between the affected unions and the district headquarters.
