Voting in Gazipur City Corporation elections has been held freely, claimed the Election Commission.
Election Commissioner Md Alamgir came up with this remark on Thursday evening, adding that at least 50 percent of votes have been cast.
Election Commissioner Alamgir addressed the journalists and said, “You tell me first how the Gazipur city election held. The information we have received from the law enforcement agencies, election commission officials, observation teams and the media is that the Gazipur city elections have been completed very smoothly and peacefully.”
“We are expecting about 50 percent turnout. However, after calculating the total, the correct information can be got,” he added.
Till filing the report around 9:40pm, ruling Awami League backed candidate Azmat Ullah got 168137 and his nearest mayoral candidate Zayeda Khatun got 155213 votes in 302 centres among 480 centres.
Update (11:30pm): In 426 centres: Azmat gets 174500, Zayeda gets 187700.
Update (12:00am): In 450 centres: Azmat gets 185379, Zayeda gets 205413.
Former ruling party backed Gazipur City Corporation mayor Zahangir Alam, son of Zayeda expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in publishing of election results to the Gazipur City Corporation.
