The body of Sumon Sheikh, 25, who died in police custody on Saturday, has been handed over to his family members.
Deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media center Faruk Hossain confirmed the matter.
He said the body was handed over to father of the deceased, Peyar Ali, around 3:00pm on Monday.
Earlier in the day, a meeting between the police high-ups and the father and brother of Sumon Sheikh was held at Hatirjheel police station. However, no details of the meeting could be known immediately.
Sumon Sheikh’s brother-in-law Musharraf Saiful later said a decision would be taken after discussing the issue with the family members. "We will have to think about the future of Sumon's child," he added.
Sumon Sheikh died in police custody at the Hatirjheel police station in Dhaka. Police claimed the youth committed suicide. However, his family said that police beaten him to death. Angered by the incident, Sumon’s relatives and local people staged a demonstration in front of the police station on Saturday.
Sumon's wife Jannat said they will lodge a case against the police responsible. They have already approached Dhaka Court.
