Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nazmul Karim Khan has revealed that journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin was killed after recording a video of a fraud attempt involving a staged trap. He made the statement at a press briefing at his office on Saturday afternoon.
According to the commissioner, on Thursday evening, a man named Badsha was withdrawing 25,000 taka from a bank when accused Golapi tried to trap and defraud him.
Badsha resisted and a scuffle ensued. Other accomplices then attacked Badsha with sharp weapons. While fleeing, Badsha was recording the incident on video, and journalist Tuhin captured the scene as part of his professional duties.
The assailants saw the video footage and demanded Tuhin delete it, but he refused. Subsequently, they stabbed Tuhin multiple times with sharp weapons, killing him on the spot before fleeing.
Within 24 hours of the incident, law enforcement arrested seven suspects involved in the murder. Last night, joint operations by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) led to their capture. One suspect was arrested by RAB, and six by GMP. Authorities have identified eight suspects through CCTV footage and are actively pursuing the remaining individual.
Commissioner Nazmul Karim emphasized that policing alone cannot eliminate crime and stressed the importance of public cooperation. He expressed regret over the incident and explained that despite preventive efforts, some crimes are inevitable globally.
He added that once the autopsy report is received, charges will be filed within 15 days. The investigation will aim for speedy trial and maximum punishment. Even if suspects deny guilt, evidence will be sufficient to prove the crime.
The commissioner extended condolences to Tuhin’s family and acknowledged the failure to provide adequate safety to journalists. He also commented on the recent rise in crime in Gazipur, attributing it partly to factory closures and unemployment since August 5 last year. He noted the influence of the “previous regime” destabilizing the area, but assured that law enforcement is working to restore peace.
Earlier Saturday morning, RAB Company Commander and Police Superintendent K.M.A. Mamun Khan Chishti held a press conference at the Porabari RAB camp in Gazipur, where he stated that arrested robbery suspect Md. Swadhin has confessed to Tuhin’s murder.
Mamun Khan said Tuhin was targeted specifically for murder, as the attackers would have otherwise ensured he was killed outright. The criminal gang’s female member had provoked a man named Badsha, who retaliated by hitting her. Following this, other gang members chased Badsha with knives, and Tuhin was filming this when the attackers noticed and assaulted him.
The suspect Swadhin, originally from Nur Mohammod village in Faridpur Upazila of Pabna district, is currently employed as a hired worker by Mohammad Ali in Nagpara.
On Thursday night around 8 pm at Chandana Chourasta, Gazipur, journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin was brutally stabbed to death inside a marketplace.
Tuhin, 38, was the Gazipur staff reporter for the daily Protidin newspaper. He lived in rented accommodation in Chandana Chourasta with his wife and two sons. He was the son of Hasan Jamal from Bhatipara village, Fulbaria Police Station, Mymensingh.
