EC to drop deceased voters year-round from voter list

The Election Commission (EC) has taken an initiative to drop the deceased voters from the electoral rolls around the year instead of a particular time of the voter list updating campaign every year.

The Commission has already formed a committee to ensure the removal of deceased voters from the electoral rolls throughout the year.

According to an office order issued on Thursday last, a 10-member committee has been constituted for this purpose.

The order said the committee, headed by the Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing, will work to keep the process of removing deceased voters active year-round.

Previously, the deceased voters were removed from the electoral roll only during the voter list update campaign.

With the formation of the committee, the names of deceased voters can now be deleted from the voter list at any time of the year.

During the most recent voter list update, some 2.1 million deceased voters were removed from the electoral rolls.

Now there are a total of 127,695,183 (12.769 crore) voters in the country.

The country’s voters include 64,814,907 male voters, 62,879,042 female voters, and 1,234 third-gender voters.
