During a discussion with leaders from the Awami League`s Chittagong division, General Secretary Obaidul Quader issued a strong caution against any rise of fundamentalism or militancy, especially if it`s camouflaged under the guise of banning student politics.
The meeting, held at the Dhaka district Awami League headquarters in Tejgaon on Sunday afternoon, saw Quader emphasizing the party`s unwavering stance against wrongdoing and corruption, championed by their leader Sheikh Hasina. He pointed to recent convictions of party members in Biswajit`s murder trial as proof of their commitment to this policy.
Quader also spoke about ongoing investigations, stressing the government`s vigilance in ensuring institutions like BUET aren`t manipulated to breed militancy while supposedly curbing student political activities. He highlighted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina`s firm stance against injustice, citing previous actions taken in cases like Abrar`s murder.
In both of these cases Chhatra league, the student wing of ruling Awami league, found their members to be involved in murder, torture and intimidation. Biswajit, an employee at a tailoring shop, was fatally attacked by a group of BCL activists near Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka on December 9, 2012.
On October 7, 2019, Abrar Fahad was fatally assaulted by a group of BCL activists, resulting in his death. After that brutal incident BUET students vehemently demanded for a permanent ban of student politics in this prestigious campus.
