Interim government advisor Mahfuz Alam has emphasized that Bangladesh’s foreign policy must focus solely on the country’s interests, rather than those of any political party.
He stressed that even with a change in government, foreign policy should always protect national interests.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, December 29, after a meeting with diplomats from Bangladesh’s embassies both at home and abroad, Mahfuz Alam highlighted the importance of safeguarding the country`s sovereignty, national security, and territorial integrity when shaping foreign policy.
He also pointed out the government’s aim to maintain friendly relations with all nations while ensuring that Bangladesh’s interests are upheld. Alam expressed concern over the foreign policy of the previous administration, which he described as "submissive."
“We need discussions between political parties to ensure that foreign policy decisions remain in line with the national interest, even if the government changes," Mahfuz Alam said.
He added, "We want to keep good relations with every country and avoid any reckless actions. If the current government has acted rashly in any way, those mistakes will be corrected."
Information Advisor Nahid Islam and Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin were also present at the event.
