After battling for her life for a month, 15-year-old student Tasnia, who was severely injured in the Milestone School and College plane crash in Diabari, Dhaka, has passed away. She died around 8 a.m. on Saturday while undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Confirming the news, Dr. Sultan Mahmud Sikder, acting residential surgeon of the institute, said Tasnia suffered 35 percent burns in the explosion and had been receiving treatment in the ICU, where she breathed her last.
Tasnia’s father, Md. Nazmul Hossain, said their home is in Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur. She was an eighth-grade student at Milestone School.
Her death brings the total number of fatalities in the crash to 36, most of them children.
Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, another residential surgeon at the institute, said Tasnia was admitted immediately after the incident with critical burns.
The tragic accident occurred on July 21, when a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed onto a building on the Milestone School and College campus. It remains the deadliest plane crash in the country’s history.
Following the crash, 56 injured people were admitted to the Burn Institute. Of them, 20 have since died, 14 have been discharged, and 22 are still receiving treatment.
Additionally, one patient remains under treatment at Dhaka’s Combined Military Hospital (CMH), where 14 others died. Two more victims succumbed to injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and United Hospital.
