In a new turn of events, students of Titumir College have blocked a railway track in Mohakhali, continuing their protests demanding the college be upgraded to an independent university.
On Monday, February 3, around 3:45 PM, the students halted train services by blocking the tracks. Earlier in the day, at about 12:30 PM, they had also blocked the road in front of the college`s main gate by placing bamboo barriers.
The protests started earlier in the week when students began boycotting their classes and exams, launching a shutdown program to demand the transformation of Titumir College into a university.
The students even staged a hunger strike the day after, with a banner reading, “Demanding National Recognition for Titumir University,” placed at the college’s main entrance.
The protests also included intermittent road blockades, which began again on Thursday.
The student group, "Titumir Unity," has outlined seven key demands, including the publication of an academic calendar with national recognition, setting up a university administration, conducting admissions for the 24-25 academic session, and ensuring full accommodation for all students or covering their accommodation costs.
Additionally, the students have called for Education and Planning Advisor Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud to retract his statement that Titumir College’s conversion to a university was not being "special considered."
They also want Legal, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Advisor Professor Asif Nazrul to publicly apologize for allegedly hindering the creation of a commission to convert the college into a university.
