The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched a new email verification system to help Bangladeshi expatriates file their income tax returns online without relying on mobile-based One-Time Passwords (OTPs).
Previously, taxpayers had to use a biometrically registered Bangladeshi mobile number to submit e-returns and reset passwords. However, many expatriates faced difficulties accessing the system, as their mobile numbers were often blocked or inaccessible outside Bangladesh.
Under the new system, eligible taxpayers who had registered in the e-return system with a biometrically verified mobile number but are currently residing abroad can now receive OTPs via their verified email addresses. This will enable them to reset passwords, complete special registration, and file income tax returns electronically.
Expatriate taxpayers must apply from their own email to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd, attaching copies of their passport, national identity card, and visa page. They also need to provide their foreign address, phone number, the date of their last departure from Bangladesh, and email details. Once the NBR verifies the submitted documents and confirms the email address, the OTP service via email will be activated.
The NBR highlighted that the online filing system has become increasingly popular due to its convenience. As of Monday, nearly 3.9 million income tax returns have been filed online for the 2025–26 tax year. The authority urged all individual taxpayers to submit their returns by February 28 through the e-return system.
