A school student was injured after being attacked by muggers in Mohammadpur area of the capital on Sunday night, police and family members said.

The victim, Sohan, 16, a Class 10 student of Turag International School, was stabbed around 9:00 pm on Number Two Road of Nabingar Housing.

Witnesses said the incident happened when he tried to stop a snatching attempt.

According to his father Jamal Hossain, Sohan was walking through the area with a friend when a group of snatchers tried to take his friend’s mobile phone.

As the phone fell to the ground, Sohan rushed forward to help, but the attackers stabbed him below both knees before fleeing.

Locals rescued the injured boy and later took him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 11:30 pm.

Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the hospital police camp, said the boy was brought from the Mohammadpur area with stab injuries.

“The family told us he was attacked by muggers. We have informed Mohammadpur police station,” he said.
Police said they are looking into the incident as concerns grow over snatching and street crime in the area.
