Tarique Rahman takes oath as Bangladesh’s 11th prime minister

BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the 11th Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, marking the formal start of the new government formed after the 13th parliamentary election.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad, according to official sources.

Earlier, the BNP Parliamentary Party unanimously chose Tarique Rahman as the Leader of the House, paving the way for his appointment as prime minister.

On Tuesday morning, newly elected BNP lawmakers also took their oaths as members of the 13th parliament. The oath was administered by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at 10:43 am, as the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th parliament remain vacant.

Officials said the MPs were sworn in only as members of parliament and not as part of the proposed Constitutional Reform Council.

The oath-taking ceremony follows the publication of the election gazette and completes the initial formalities for the formation of the new government under Tarique Rahman’s leadership.
