Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government will review firearm licences issued during the Awami League government to determine whether they were granted in accordance with due legal process and to eligible individuals.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with heads of departments and agencies under the Ministry of Home Affairs at the ministry`s conference room on 23 February, he said,
After the review, licences granted lawfully and to individuals who meet the eligibility criteria will remain valid.
"However, licences issued to those who were not eligible or not granted in accordance with the law – that is, licences given with political motives or considerations, or to facilitate any criminal activity – will be cancelled." he added.
Minister Ahmed also noted that any firearms held under such cancelled licences, along with ammunition, will be confiscated.
A circular will be issued today directing authorities at the district level to supervise the review process.
