Dhaka University (DU) authorities have been declared the university close after an emergency meeting of highest policy-making body, syndicate, under the guard of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The students have been instructed to vacate the dormitories by 6pm.
The meeting was held at the vice-chancellor`s (VC) office keeping the VC Prof ASM Maksud Kamal in chair on Wednesday (July 17) around 10am.
The highest policy-making forum of the university held the emergency meeting to determine the next course of action following the clashes with the Chhatra League and quota agitators on the campus centered the ongoing movement of students and job aspirants demanding cancellation of quota in government jobs.
A press release sent by DU Public Relations Department said:
- After reviewing the situation, under article 24 (L) of the Dhaka University Order 1973, the university has been closed for an indefinite period in order to maintain the safety of the students and sound academic environment.
- All the students staying in the halls/hostels are instructed to vacate the halls/hostels by 6pm. Later after the opening of the halls, the students will get seats based on merit. Outsiders have been instructed not to enter and stay in the campus.
- A decision has been taken to provide medical assistance to the injured teachers and students of university.
- The government was called upon to find a logical solution to the existing quota system.
On Tuesday night, the UGC wrote to the Vice-Chancellors instructing all universities in the country to remain closed until further notice and to vacate the halls of residence of the students.
The movement to demand quota reform started in the universities. Protests spread across the country yesterday after the attack and clash of BCL on students last Monday. Students left the educational institution and came down to the streets and blocked the roads and highways. Protesting students were also attacked in different areas of the country yesterday.
