Apu Biswas granted bail in attempted murder case linked to July uprising

Apu Biswas had earlier secured a six-week anticipatory bail from the High Court on June 2.

Popular Dhallywood actress Apu Biswas has been granted bail by a Dhaka court in an attempted murder case related to the July movement.

The order was issued on Sunday by Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, following a hearing in the case.

According to her lawyer, Abul Bashar Kamrul, Apu Biswas had earlier secured a six-week anticipatory bail from the High Court on June 2.

In compliance with the High Court‍‍`s directive, she appeared before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to submit her bail bond, and formally surrendered on Sunday seeking regular bail, which was granted by the judge.

The case stems from a complaint filed in March by a man named Enamul Haque, who accused 283 individuals—including political leaders and cultural figures—of attempted murder during the July turmoil.

He claimed that on July 19, demonstrators gathered in front of Bhatara Police Station when gunfire was opened on them. Enamul was reportedly shot in the leg and later received medical treatment.

On April 29, following court instructions, Bhatara Police began the process of recording the complaint as a formal case, according to Inspector (Investigation) Sujan Haque.

The list of accused includes several celebrities such as actresses Nusrat Faria, Nipun Akter, Ashna Habib Bhabna, and actor Zayed Khan, alongside former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The complaint alleges that these artists took a public stance against the anti-discrimination movement and financially supported the ruling Awami League.

Notably, actress Nusrat Faria was arrested on May 18 and sent to jail the following day. She was granted bail on May 20.

The case continues to draw significant public and media attention due to its high-profile defendants and political undertones.
