UK reaffirms support for free, fair and peaceful elections

The United Kingdom has reiterated its support for a free, fair, credible, and peaceful election in Bangladesh. British High Commissioner Sarah Cook stated that the UK intends to assist the Election Commission in facilitating the process.

The High Commissioner made the remarks on Monday after meeting with Chief Election Commissioner A. M. M. Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission office in Agargaon.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sarah Cook said, “We have reiterated the UK’s support for a free, fair, credible, and peaceful election in Bangladesh next year. We appreciate the efforts of the Election Commission, the interim government, and our international partners.”

She added that the UK is supporting the Election Commission, particularly through voter education and training of polling personnel under the National Civic Education Programme, with a focus on marginalized groups. “Today, our agenda was to discuss the UK’s support to the Election Commission, and we have covered these topics,” she said.

On inclusive elections, the High Commissioner stated, “I have nothing further to add. As I have mentioned, the UK supports a free, fair, credible, and peaceful election in Bangladesh next year. Thank you.”

It is notable that the Election Commission, led by A. M. M. Nasir Uddin, is preparing to hold the 13th National Parliamentary Election in the first half of February next year, ahead of Ramadan.
