Bangladesh’s measles outbreak has pushed the combined number of confirmed and suspected deaths past 1,000, with three more children dying from measles-like symptoms in the latest 24-hour period.
The latest fatalities, recorded up to 8am Wednesday, were classified as suspected measles deaths by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The combined death toll now stands at 1,002, including 902 suspected and 100 confirmed deaths.
The country reported 1,119 new suspected measles cases during the same period, taking the total number of suspected cases to 167,580.
Another 69 laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded, raising the total number of confirmed infections to 19,904, according to DGHS data.
Since March 15, a total of 147,393 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 141,819 have recovered and been discharged.
The latest figures come as Bangladesh continues to grapple with a major measles outbreak that has placed significant pressure on hospitals and disproportionately affected children.
