Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has dismissed allegations of persecution against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, asserting that there is “no anti-Hindu violence” in the country.
Speaking to journalist Mehdi Hasan of the independent media outlet GTO on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Yunus said, “One of India’s defining characteristics today is fake news.” The interview was published on Monday.
Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, assumed the role of Chief Adviser after Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power during the 2024 mass uprising. Reflecting on his unexpected appointment, he admitted, “I was surprised.” Though initially reluctant, he eventually agreed, telling the protestors, “If you can make such sacrifices, I can change my decision.”
In the interview, Yunus also discussed the rationale behind delaying national elections, the ongoing Rohingya crisis, and the move to ban the activities of the Awami League.
