Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will receive full security if she returns to Bangladesh to face the judicial process, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.
He made the remarks at a press briefing on government activities at the Press Information Department (PID) conference room at the Secretariat.
The adviser also said cricketer and former lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan would be given full security if he returns to Bangladesh to face the cases against him.
“There is no reason for him to feel insecure,” Zahed said in response to a question about Shakib’s recent comments.
Shakib recently told Reuters that he wanted to return to Bangladesh and face the cases filed against him if he was assured of his safety.
Zahed said Shakib would have to return and face the legal process rather than expect special treatment.
“He will come to Bangladesh to face the cases, the law and the trial,” he said, questioning whether Shakib feared being attacked by people after arriving at the airport.
The adviser said security would be provided to Shakib so that he could face the allegations and complete all legal procedures.
“If he comes accepting all that, I see no problem,” Zahed said.
However, Zahed strongly criticised Shakib over his political ties with Sheikh Hasina, describing him as a “rotten and decayed person.”
“He may be a good player, but he is a rotten and decayed person. A person who aligned himself with Hasina and is still aligned with her,” he said.
The adviser also accused Shakib of using his recent comments to spread what he called “propaganda” against the government.
“Each of these statements is actually propaganda against our government,” he said.
