A Dhaka court has cleared BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 21 others of charges in a case filed over the burning of a police vehicle in Bijoynagar, Paltan, during the BNP’s grand rally ahead of the 12th national election.

On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Faiz accepted the police’s final report and ordered their discharge from the case.

Mirza Fakhrul’s lawyer, Zakir Hossain, confirmed the development, saying that among those discharged are Jubo Dal General Secretary Nurul Islam Noyon, Convener Khandaker Enamul Haque Enam, Member Secretary Robiul Islam Noyon, and Principal Muhammad Sohrab Uddin.

According to the case statement, the BNP held a grand rally in Paltan on October 28, 2023, where several leaders delivered anti-government and provocative speeches. Following the rally, BNP activists and members of its associate bodies allegedly attacked police with brick chips and exploded crude bombs. They also set fires at several spots and torched a police vehicle after injuring Constable Shahin Alam by throwing bricks. Several other policemen were also injured in the attack.

Constable Shahin later filed a case with Paltan Police Station on November 3, 2023, after receiving treatment.

Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin Morshed submitted the final report on February 15 this year, recommending the discharge of Mirza Fakhrul and 21 others. The court accepted the report on Sunday, formally clearing all 22 accused.
