UK trade envoy arrives in Dhaka on five-day visit

UK Trade Envoy Baroness Rosie Winterton has arrived in Dhaka for a five-day official visit aimed at deepening trade and investment relations between the United Kingdom and Bangladesh, the British High Commission said in a statement. She landed in Dhaka on Sunday.

During her stay, Baroness Winterton is scheduled to meet with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin, Education Adviser Professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, and Special Envoy for International Affairs Lutfey Siddiqi.

The discussions are expected to focus on economic reforms, trade expansion, and investment partnerships between the two countries.

The UK envoy will also hold meetings with leaders of Bangladesh’s major political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party.

These discussions will reaffirm the UK’s long-term commitment as a strategic growth partner for Bangladesh.

According to the High Commission, Baroness Winterton will visit Dhaka and Chattogram, meeting key stakeholders in aviation, higher education, renewable energy, and defense sectors. In Chattogram, she will inspect UK-linked investment projects that are contributing to job creation, supply chain development, and economic growth in both countries.

Her visit will also highlight the significance of the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), which grants duty-free access for Bangladeshi exports to the UK market until 2029. This facility is expected to help Bangladesh maintain export competitiveness as it graduates from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category.

The trade envoy will further meet representatives from British International Investment (BII)—the UK’s development finance institution—and its local partners to discuss green financing and sustainable infrastructure development.

The British High Commission said the visit aims to support Bangladesh’s long-term economic reform agenda and to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties for mutual prosperity.

“The UK and Bangladesh share a dynamic and growing economic partnership,” Baroness Winterton said. “I’m here to reaffirm our commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s remarkable development journey and to explore new trade and investment opportunities beneficial to both nations.”

She added, “I look forward to seeing UK-supported investments firsthand—those creating jobs, strengthening supply chains, and adding real value to both our economies.”

British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke said, “This is the second visit by the UK Trade Envoy in six months, underscoring the UK’s strong commitment to Bangladesh’s economic reforms and long-term growth. Our trade partnership continues to grow stronger, and we look forward to deepening it further for shared prosperity.”
