Minor among four drown in Jamalpur floodwater

Ina tragic turn of events, four people, including a child and two teenagers, have drowned while taking a bath in floodwater in Jamalpur‍‍`s Melandah Upazila.

The incident took place in Dakshin Baluchar area of ​​Shyampur Union around 5 pm on Sunday.

The deceased are Babul Mia‍‍`s wife Roksana Begum (32), Sabuj Mia‍‍`s daughter Sadia (14), Golap Uddin‍‍`s daughter Khadija (9) and Delwar Hossain‍‍`s daughter Disha Akhter (17).

In this regard, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Melandah Police Station Raju Ahmed said, "On Sunday afternoon, four people went together to bathe in flood water near the house. At that time, when Sadia and Khadija drowned in the water, housewives Roksana and Disha Akhtar searched to rescue them. Later they too drowned in the flood waters.”

It comes as approximately 300,000 people have been marooned as the flood situation in Jamalpur has worsened due to the continued rise of the waters of the Jamuna and other rivers.

Jamalpur Department of Agricultural Extension Deputy Director Zakia Sultana said that 8,000 hectares of cropland have been submerged due to the floods. Nineteen community clinics, 259 primary and 88 secondary schools have suspended classes.
