The Election Commission has given warnings and directions to all officials on how to utilize their devices to avoid potential cyberattacks during the election.
System Analyst Mamunur Hossain of EC`s Data Management Branch issued the directives on Saturday.
According to the directive, based on the cyber threat alert report `ongoing phishing campaign targeting Bangladesh` published by BGD e-Government CIRT, all Election Commission endpoint device users are asked to take appropriate measures and precautions to protect themselves from phishing attacks.
Previously, the BGD E-Gov CIRT issued a warning regarding the possibility of cyberattacks in the country during the elections. According to the report, a hacking group known as `Sidewinder` has been identified as targeting Southeast Asian governments, military, law enforcement, the health sector, telecommunications, and financial institutions. They also have a presence in Bangladesh. The hacker organization is executing campaigns utilizing military and police phishing domain names.
The group sends the target a fraudulent phishing email. Hackers use a trusted domain name to deceive recipients into thinking the email is from a government entity. Hackers install a code and steal all the information when the recipient clicks on the link.
The 12th National Parliamentary Election will continue from 8:00am to 4:00pm today.
