Former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General (Retd.) M Harun-Ar-Rashid was found dead on Monday (August 4) at a guest room of the Chittagong Club, according to local authorities.
Officials from the Bangladesh Army and Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) rushed to the scene after being alerted around 11:30 AM. The body was discovered inside Room 308 of the club’s guest house, where the former army chief had stayed the previous night after attending a wedding event.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of CMP’s South Zone, Md. Alamgir Hossain, confirmed that the retired general had a scheduled meeting in the morning. When repeated calls to his mobile phone went unanswered and he failed to respond to knocks at the door, staff members broke the glass door of the balcony and found him lying unresponsive on the bed.
“There are no apparent signs of injury on his body at this time,” said DC Alamgir. A preliminary inquest (surathal report) is being prepared on-site. Personnel from the Army, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Crime Scene Unit are currently present at the location.
Authorities stated that a post-mortem examination will be conducted upon receiving consent from the family to determine the exact cause of death.
